Giants Chair - Red and Clear - Caulfield Records 1995

I have been posting so much punk lately that I've kind of burnt myself out on it , so I figured I would completely change it up and post a record by one of my favorite bands from the mid 90's. I guess people would call this emo for lack of a better term, but it's not at all what you would expect emo to sound like compared to current standards. In the 90's a lot of bands fell under the emo tag because they didn't fit neatly under the " indie rock" tag, and I think Giants Chair are one of those bands that defied classification to a certain extent.

Anyway, this record is full of tight almost mechanically precise drumming, churning rhythms, excellent guitar playing and of course emotional vocals. I recommend you listen to this record a few times and let it sink in, but if you want a quick fix go straight to the 3rd track "Gutshot and The Jogger" which is probably my favorite song on this record, I really like how the song builds on itself as it progresses...Dave G.

Wards - The World Ain't Pretty And Neither Are We - self released 1983

I absolutely love this record but I have never posted it for some reason, maybe because I know it's already on a few other blogs, but isn't everything ? The Wards hail from the punk rock hotbed of Burlington Vermont (lol) and are actually still active to this day playing locally in and around VT.

As far as this record goes I think it's a perfect combination of simplicity, catchiness and pure snot nosed punk rock.

On a side note, I emailed the Wards a few years ago to see if they had a copy of one of their original demos, they emailed me back and asked for my address and said they would send me something special...of course they never sent me anything lol... Oh well, I still love you Wards...Dave G.

No Fraud - The EP - No Clubs Records 1986

And yet another Florida punk /hardcore band... No Fraud from Venice Florida dropped this outstanding 7" in 1986. What you get is straight up fast and power hardcore, no messing around on this one. I think this might be the end of my Florida hardcore 7" collection, but you never know.

Pagan Faith - st 7" 1985 No Club Records

Cool record from these Clearwater Florida punks. This one works best when they are playing straight forward hardcore punk, however the record loses steam with the pretty terrible B-side opener "Wimpy Skank". Remove the b-side opener, and you have yourself a really good record.

***Received a request to post the Pagan Faith demo, but I do not have it. Does anyone have mp3 files they could contribute ? **** email me Dave88@optonline.net

We Can't Help It If We're From Florida compilation - Destroy Records 1983

Good Compilation especially the Hated Youth and Roach Motel tracks. If you like HY and RM there is a compilation Lp out there that is definitely worth picking up. The Split lp features nineteen previously unreleased HATED YOUTH tracks from 1984, backed with thirteen ROACH MOTEL songs recorded live in 1983. The Hated Youth songs were recorded in 1984 and were originally intended to be an LP on Destroy Records. The Roach Motel tracks were recorded live at Flynn's in Miami, October 22, 1983.

Acid Reflux - Demo Tape 2006

Here's a demo tape by a newer punk band that I like. I was shocked to see that this demo came out 4 years ago when I was ripping it, Jesus where does the time go ? Anyway, the band released a 7" version of this demo that had better sound quality, but a few less songs than are on the tape. They also followed up that record with a second 7" called "Secret Powers" and just last week released their 3rd 7" "Moves" on No Way Records.

Purchase Moves 7" here.

Coldsteel - Dead By Dawn - Demo Tape 88-89

I decided to do a double Friday post today since I had to finish up my Big City posts, but I also feel like I have been neglecting the Metal heads a bit lately. Hopefully with these 2 posts I can make a little bit of each crowd happy this weekend.

Anyway, I mail ordered this demo from the band back in the late 80's. The music is pretty good ,there are some real nice riffs here and there, it actually sounds very much like Testament to my ears in a lot of places. The vocals sometimes remind me of Joey Belladonna ( Anthrax), Hetfield or maybe Death Angel or that Flotsam and Jetsam dude at times, I don't know I can't totally put my finger on it . If you’re into obscure old school thrash metal this one is worth a listen.

Nice and Loud - Big City Records 1984

I guess I may as well finish up my Big City Records compilations posts today with this 7" which featured 3 bands from New York vs. 3 bands from CT. I think CT won this battle, but in all fairness if you have C.I.A on your side you are going to win quite a few musical face offs in my opinion...Dave G.

Chronic Sick Represses Available

100% legit reissues of these NJ hardcore/punk classics. Forget about paying $500 - $1000 for the original presses, and forget about picking up one of those bootlegs that have been floating around ebay for months. Pick up both records for $17... limited colored vinyl while supplies last.

Big City - "Don't Want No PIty" Big City Records 1984

I figured I may as well follow up "Ain't Too Pretty" with this one. Once again I like all the songs on this 7", but my favorite track for whatever reason is the Unjust track, probably simply because it's the most uptempo song on the record. The other song I am most into would be the No Control track because I'm a sucker for female punk vocals...Dave G.

Big City - "Ain't Too Pretty" compilation 1983 Big City Records

Well known early NYHC compilation. I like every song on this record honestly. If you like the Savage Circle tracks then check my older posts for their 7" as well. Early NYHC sure started out in a different place than where it ended up 5 - 10 years down the road.

P.S. If you like the No Thanks track there is an excellent compilation Lp available and a bunch of other recordings available through the bands Myspace page here

100 Flowers - Happy Squid Records 1982

As you may already know 100 Flowers were formerly The Urinals, and this record is their first 7" after the name change. The A-side Presence of Mind is my favorite track on this one with it's rhythmic bass and jangly guitar, which give it a nice post punk feel. The B-side Dyslexia has a little more of a Urinals feel to it to my ears, but it's a bit more fleshed out than The Urinals, and last but not least is the 3rd and final track which is a short dub mash up...good stuff.

Also, I suggest you track down a copy of their other records or the 100 Years of Pulchitude cd which collects their 16 song 100 Flowers 1983 album, the 1982 Presence of Mind single, compilation tracks from the 1981 Hell Comes to Your House and 1983 Warfrat Tales as well as the 1984 five song Drawing Fire ep and two unreleased songs ('I Hate' and 'I'm Like You' which are very familiar to anyone who's seen them or the URINALS a few times). This cd is out of print, but it looks like there are some used copies on Amazon.

The Accelerators - s/t 7" Mutha Records 1984

Take a touch of 60's garage rock, add a sprinkle of the Ramones and what you get is New Jersey's Accelerators. Good stuff, a classic to some and definitely an important record in the history of underground punk rock in the Garden State. .

Here's a little bonus information I found on Collector Scum:

"The singer/guitarist, John Hanson, later died through misadventure and drugs, while the bassist and co-songwriter, Ron Nole, would bring the Accelerators' song catalogue into the Parasites, a noteworthy San Francisco band.[GM]"

P.S. For all you Mutha Records fans. The official Chronic Sick represses are about to drop any day now. Keep an eye on No Way Records for the repress of the 7" and the 12".

C.I.A. - God, Guts, Guns and more 12" More Than A Witness Product Records

I just picked this record up and I love it so much that I wanted to take the time to recommend it to everyone. The Lp includes the classic 7" God, Guns, Guts plus you get 5 outtakes from the 7 " session, the Audio West demo from 1982, the Blue Basement Demo from 1982, the Lost Rehearsal Tape from 1982 and a couple live tracks from The Anthrax Gallery 1983.

There have been a lot of these types of compilation LP's coming out lately, but this is honestly one of the best if not the best one yet. The sound quality is top notch and every song on this record rips. The other thing that's great about this collection is that none of the songs are repeated, so if you have only heard the 7" then there are 14 songs on this platter that you have never heard...so get off your ass and go get a copy right HERE . Tell Chris at MTAWP that Rocket Science sent you...Dave G.

The Outskirts - Blue Line / The Letter - True Religion Records 1981

Two punky, mod, pop, post punk songs ? hahahah, yeah I have no idea how to describe this one. I guess if you like Liliput / Kleenex or Delta 5 you may like this, however I will assume that if you are a regular follower of my blog then you'll probably hate this record. Whatever, no skin off my back, I think this records great.

No Alternative - Backtracks - Subterranean Records 1981

Make Guns Not Love

Cool, mid paced punk rock with a rockabilly or punkabilly vibe if you will. The first song Make Guns Not Love is one of those songs that will stick in your head after one listen and stay there for awhile. If you like this, there is an Lp out that contains No Alternative recordings from 1978 - 1982 on Dionysus Records.
