Wide Awake - Hold True Demo

Straightedge hardcore from CT in the NYHC style. I got nothing else to add really...I'll let the music do the talking.

Franklin - Something Blue, Automotive 7" 1993 Slug Records

Franklin is another band that came out of the 90's emo scene. I know emo is a dirty word these days, but this is nothing like the shit they pass off as emo today. These guys have a more DC Revolution Summer style sound.

I spent some time as a roadie for my brothers band in the 90's and we played probably 10 shows with Franklin over the years. We would travel hundreds of miles to some nowhere cow town following directions written on a Mc Donald’s napkin, and when we would turn into the VFW Hall or Firehouse or some kids living room...Franklin would usually be sitting outside having a smoke, and that was always a comfort because we knew that even if only 10 kids showed up at least we would get to see Franklin play again.

Hates - Panacia Lp Faceless Records 1982

Hates only full length Lp. I never cared for this record because it has a bit of a more pop sound than their 7 inches, however I gave it another listen today and I think I can get into this one with a few more spins..

Modern English - Swans On Glass / Incident 7" 4 AD 1980

Here is another top notch Modern English single on 4 AD. I am really into this early ME material, but since most of you seem to be allergic to commenting on my posts, I have no idea if I am digging this shit all on my own. Maybe it's time to cut back on the posts or take the blog in a different direction.

Hates - Do The Caryl Chessman 7" Faceless Records 1980

This is the second fantastic single from the Hates. I posted there first single a few months back if you want it. I picked this one up yesterday at the NY Punk Rock Record Fair in Brooklyn. For my money this show is a can't miss, much smaller but much better than the WFMU record fair if your strickly looking for punk and metal vinyl, which is pretty much all I am ever looking for. I picked up a few other records that will hit the blog later in the week.

Bastro - Shoot Me A Deer / Goiter Blazes - Homestead Records 1989

My friend Brian has been asking me to post a Bastro single for some time now. I know this isn't the record you are looking for B, but it's the only Bastro single I have.

Bastro sounds very similar to Big Black in my opinion. Here is some details about this band of indie rock stars that I lifted from Wikipedia lol.

"Bastro were one of two bands formed by Squirrel Bait guitarist David Grubbs after the former band folded in 1987, together with Squirrel Bait's bassist Clark Johnson and a drum machine. Later, noted drummer John McEntire (Tortoise, The Sea And Cake) replaced the drum machine. Johnson was later replaced by Bundy K. Brown. Bastro released one EP and two albums before Grubbs, McEntire and Brown retired the Bastro name in 1993 and continued as Gastr del Sol."

The Outlets - 7" Modern Method Records 1982

I have never been a huge powerpop fan, but this record found it's way into my collection a few years back and it's honestly really good. Here is what the Flex discography has to say about it:

"Great melodic pop punk from this long-time Boston band. Side A is classic catchy music; B side is a slower song but still for pop/punk. Real winner".

Modern English - Smiles and Laughter / Mesh and Lace 7" 4AD Records 1981

Here is some more moody 80's rock. What can I say, I am on an 80's kick this week so that is what you are going to get. Anyway, this 7" rules as does all of the early Modern English tunes. Hey Screambloodygore download this record...Dave G.

Sad Lovers & Giants - Colourless Dream 7" 1981

Here is another moody 80's rock record to keep you dancing. Don't worry, it's completely normal if you find yourself dancing around in your underwear like you're in some lost scene from the Breakfast Club, though I have certainly never done that.

Savage Thrust - But Soon Revenge / Agony & Extacy 7" 1987

Thrash metal form Staten Island NY. I had their demo back in the day but it's lost forever. They also released 1 Lp that I am aware of.

Anthrax - Soldiers of Metal ep Megaforce Records 1983

Erich over at Good Bad Music For Bad, Bad Times posted this ep not too long ago. Honestly, you should go to his blog and download his superior vinyl rip of this 7" just for qualities sake, but if you ain't picky then just download my humble rip. I am only posting this here because I finally found this beat up copy of this single after 20+ years of searching for it, and I feel it should be a part of my blog. I remember seeing the ep on the wall of Rock N' Heaven in Clark NJ when it came out, but for some reason I would always pass it up. Then of course on the one trip where I said I am buying that damn Anthrax single today...it was gone forever, well almost forever...Dave G.

Second Layer - Torche records 1979

Second Layer is another project from Adrian Borland the lead singer of The Sound. This single was released in 1979, and it is a pretty minimal and dark sounding record.
If you like moody 80's rock like early Simple Minds or Modern English then you will probably like this. I don't know what else to say.

Man Sized Action - Five Story Garage - Reflex Records 1984

So I am sitting here trying to decide how the hell I am going to follow up Satan's Massacre, and I realized that it's really not possible. So instead of trying to top that post I am just going to put it behind me and move forward.

"Five Story Garage" is the second and I believe final Lp by Man Sized Action. I posted their first Lp "Claustrophobia" a few months back so I figured I would post this Lp for the people who enjoyed the first Lp. Musically this is more of the same really, which is a good thing, a really really good thing actually. The urgent vocals and rhythmic drumming is still on display, and my previous comparison to Middle Class still holds true. The only real difference that I hear on "Five Story Garage" is that there is now a bit of a Husker Du feel to the guitars. Honestly, this record and "claustrophobia" come highly recommended by me (lol), and I strongly urge everyone to give them a listen.

Satan's Massacre - Robbing The Graveyard & Raping the Dead ( complete demo tape rip) 1987

This is a repost to replace the incomplete demo tape that I posted back in February of 2008. My friend TZA just dug the original tape out of storage and re-ripped it in it's entirety this time around. The quality of the rip is A+ , much better than my normal shitty rips lol. For those of you in the know, I know you have been waiting for this complete tape to be upped for a very long time. For those of you not in the know all I can say is that this is the best metal demo in the history of metal. Seriously, the music is beyond words, so grab it now and become the coolest kid on the block, and tell your friends where you got it so I can become the coolest old guy on my block...Dave G.

I know this tape is super rare and desirable, so remember to comment and thank TZA for the hook up.

Here

If you are on the fence about downloading this then these song titles should cure you of your foolishness:

01. seven guitars of hell (intro)
02. rape of the wolf women
03. curse of the two blind people
04. the bitch is mine (sex with satan)
05. zhabar - the hideous horned demon
06. midnight (virgin sacrifice)
07. black legions of hell
08. rape the witches daughter

Farside - Keep My Soul Awake - Crisis Records 1990

Farside reminds me of Bad Religion in some ways on this their first 7" . I really liked this one back in the day and it still holds a certain amount of charm for me. Somehow I became pen pals with the singer Popeye for a bit. I remember he sent me a cassette of some cool demo and acoustic tracks that I need to dig out from my tape box. He also invited me to a show at The Anthrax in CT, but I chicken out and never went. Anyway, Farside signed to revelation records and went on to release a bunch of full lengths over the next 10 years or so...so if you like this ep please head over to revelation and purchase a full length or two which I am sure are still in print.

Ded Engine s/t Lp Pentagram Records 1985

This is a really good record. Good vocals, riffs etc...total NWOBHM Judas Priest worship is what you will find in the grooves of this LP, and that is fine with me. I also posted their first 7" a few months back which contains 1 song "South of Hell" which is not on this Lp.
