Tyrant - Too Late To Pray - Combat Records 1987

Picked this record up this past weekend at my new favorite record store. I can't believe how much awesome punk and metal records this shop had. Anyway, I had Tyrants first Lp as a kid and stupidly sold it in the 90's. When I saw this one sitting in the bin for $3 I had to have it. What you get is really good doom/power metal I guess you could call it. They use a falsetto scream in the background of many of these tracks which is pretty cool and actually sort of original for this style of metal. There are times on this record where Jag Panzer comes to mind and that is a very good thing in my opinion. Now all I have to do is track down a copy of their first Lp and add it back to the collection.

P.S. I was just advised that Tyrant is still active and playing in NYC on 10/15/10 so anyone in the area should definitely check them out. I also see that they have some merch available on their webpage , so if you like this post please stop by their band page and show some support as well. Band page is here

Man, i haven't heard, or even thought of this band for years. i remmeber thinkin their first record was really cool and unique. "Fall into the hands of evil" is the tune that sticks out in my memory as a nice epic doomy pounder. always thought Sanctuary - "Refuge Denied" - was another good power/doom mix in the same vein. And another band that did those high pitched background screams really well was Damien Thorne - peep "The Ritual" from their first Lp./ they add some delay to it, and it sounds like the dude is comin screamin outta the speakers at u.

i loved the cover art on th first Tyrant record. How they were standing there in the middle of some midnight thunderstorm yet there was still some mysterious sun glow on the band and their car. hahahaa

I guess the falsetto isn't as original as I thought JBM. I'm not familiar with the other bands you mentioned so the falsetto was new to my ears. Still a good record as is the first LP.

Somehow this record brings to mind the first Carnivore record also. Something in the vocals and riffing at times . Anyone else hear it ?

to be sure, i wasn't disputing the originality of Tyrant with my comparisons - Damien Thorne's first record came out in '86, and Sanctuary in '87. Still def worth peeping both bands/records if u dig the Tyrant stuff. I can see what your sayin about Carnivore as well - wasn't it Muldowney who said Carnivore was like a doomy Manowar?? though he wasn't bein nice. i was thinkin in a way, it could also compare to aerly Running Wild and Deathwish "At The Edge Of Damnation".

glad u posted this. i can't d/l anything on this computer at the mo, but i've got the first LP on cassette and i listened to some of it last night. Great stuff indeed.

I have to try anything that reminds you of carnivores first record.

I was a penpal of one of the TYRANTS guys in ca. 1983/84. I remember they were very popular among tape traders and the appearance on that one Metal Massacre made many believe that this could be the heaviest band on Metal Blade (that's how I remember it, at least). Too bad I can't find the tapes no more, because the first LP kinda disappointed me. Didn't even know this slab here exists. Sounds really good, maybe better than the first, überambitious one.

Erich I agree. I sold the first Lp because I wasn't that into it, but this Lp "Too Late Too Pray" is a big improvement over the first Lp in my opinion.
