Tanner - Ill - Gotten Gains - Caroline 1995

Tanner from San Diego Ca. were another of the mid 90's bands that sort of didn't fit neatly into any specific musical category. " Ill Gotten Gains" is an excellent cd that reminds me of the Hot Snakes which makes sense since lead vocalist /guitarist Gar Wood would go on to play with the Hot Snakes a few years after this cd was released. The cd is OOP as is the vinyl, however there are some cds's for sale on Amazon.com , and some more sound files are available from the bands website right here .

I saw Tanner live a bunch of times in the mid 90's and they killed it every time. I was such a big fan of this band that when the Hot Snakes formed I was as excited that Gar Wood was a part of the Hot Snakes as I was that Reis and Fork of Drive Like Jehu (another favorite of mine) were part of the Hot Snakes.

Yes, Rick Fork and John Reis were both in Drive Like Jehu and Pitchfork and later played together again along with Gar Wood in The Hot Snakes. Also Mark Trombino recorded "Ill Gotten Gains" and he was the drummer in Drive Like Jehu.

John Reis was also in Rocket From The Crypt, The Sultans, Night Marchers and more. Rick Fork is now in The Obits. Gar Wood also played in Fishwife who predated Tanner and the last I knew he was in Beehive and the Barracudas.

yeah i figured Rocket From the Crypt fit into the equation somehow. while we're claiming our fav earl 90s San diego bands, I'll take Chune (they were SD right??). They of course had a nice little split 7" w/ Garden Variety, who i know ive seen on this hurr blawg.

Yes JBM, Chune did do a split with Garden Variety. I used to like Chune a lot as well. I saw them live a few times. I was planning on posting some Chune on the blog, perhaps I'll throw up the split 7".

cool, yeah theyre one a those bands i def think a lot of folks would dig if they only had the chance to hear em.

also worth noting the contradictory cover art on either side of the split. the Garden Variety side bein that nice simple paiting with pleasant colors, and well, then theres the Chune side..

Yeah Chris, we saw a lot of great bands in almost empty rooms in and around NYC in the 90's.
