I guess I may as well finish up my Big City Records compilations posts today with this 7" which featured 3 bands from New York vs. 3 bands from CT. I think CT won this battle, but in all fairness if you have C.I.A on your side you are going to win quite a few musical face offs in my opinion...Dave G.

Big City - "Don't Want No PIty" Big City Records 1984

I figured I may as well follow up "Ain't Too Pretty" with this one. Once again I like all the songs on this 7", but my favorite track for whatever reason is the Unjust track, probably simply because it's the most uptempo song on the record. The other song I am most into would be the No Control track because I'm a sucker for female punk vocals...Dave G.

Well known early NYHC compilation. I like every song on this record honestly. If you like the Savage Circle tracks then check my older posts for their 7" as well. Early NYHC sure started out in a different place than where it ended up 5 - 10 years down the road.

100 Flowers - Happy Squid Records 1982

As you may already know 100 Flowers were formerly The Urinals, and this record is their first 7" after the name change. The A-side Presence of Mind is my favorite track on this one with it's rhythmic bass and jangly guitar,which give it a nice post punk feel. The B-side Dyslexia has a little more of a Urinals feel to it to my ears, but it's a bit more fleshed out than The Urinals, and last but not least is the 3rd and final track which is a short dub mash up...good stuff.

Also, I suggest you track down a copy of their other records or the 100 Years of Pulchitude cd which collects their 16 song 100 Flowers 1983 album, the 1982 Presence of Mind single, compilation tracks from the 1981 Hell Comes to Your House and 1983 Warfrat Tales as well as the 1984 five song Drawing Fire ep and two unreleased songs ('I Hate' and 'I'm Like You' which are very familiar to anyone who's seen them or the URINALS a few times). This cd is out of print, but it looks like there are some used copies on Amazon.

The Accelerators - s/t 7" Mutha Records 1984

Take a touch of 60's garage rock, add a sprinkle of the Ramones and what you get is New Jersey's Accelerators. Good stuff, a classic to some and definitely an important record in the history of underground punk rock in the Garden State. .

Here's a little bonus information I found on Collector Scum:

"The singer/guitarist, John Hanson, later died through misadventure and drugs, while the bassist and co-songwriter, Ron Nole, would bring the Accelerators' song catalogue into the Parasites, a noteworthy San Francisco band.[GM]"

C.I.A. - God, Guts, Guns and more 12" More Than A Witness Product Records

I just picked this record up and I love it so much that I wanted to take the time to recommend it to everyone. The Lp includes the classic 7" God, Guns, Guts plus you get 5 outtakes from the 7 " session, the Audio West demo from 1982, the Blue Basement Demo from 1982, the Lost Rehearsal Tape from 1982 and a couple live tracks from The Anthrax Gallery 1983.

There have been a lot of these types of compilation LP's coming out lately, but this is honestly one of the best if not the best one yet. The sound quality is top notch and every song on this record rips. The other thing that's great about this collection is that none of the songs are repeated, so if you have only heard the 7" then there are 14 songs on this platter that you have never heard...so get off your ass and go get a copy right HERE . The Outskirts - Blue Line / The Letter - True Religion Records 1981

Two punky, mod, pop, post punk songs ? hahahah, yeah I have no idea how to describe this one. I guess if you like Liliput / Kleenex or Delta 5 you may like this,however I will assume that if you are a regular follower of my blog then you'll probably hate this record. Whatever, no skin off my back, I think this records great.

Cool, mid paced punk rock with a rockabilly or punkabilly vibe if you will. The first song Make Guns Not Love is one of those songs that will stick in your head after one listen and stay there for awhile. If you like this, there is an Lp out that contains No Alternative recordings from 1978 - 1982 on Dionysus Records.

5051 7" plus 2 bonus tracks from 1981

I found 2 previously unreleased songs by 5051 on the net today, so I figured I would repost their 7" and include the bonus tracks. For more information about these songs check Che' Underground. The songs were recorded during the same 1981 session that produced the 4 songs on this 7", however the 2 omitted tracks were older songs and the band decided to only put their newest material on the 7". It appears one of the band members uncovered these tracks on an old cassette and decided to share them, and for that I say thank you !!!

Th' Inbred - Reproduction 7" Frozen Sound Studio Recordings

Fast cynical hardcore punk from these West Virginians, I guess the closest comparison would be Dead Kennedy's. This is a really good single with a lot of quirkiness and excellent vocals. If you like this I suggest you track down their first LP "A Family Affair" which is also excellent. My copy of this single is so scratchy, man I love it...I hate mint condition punk singles lol.

VKTMS - 100 % White Girl / No Long Good-Byes - 415 Records - 1980

This is the 2nd single from the female fronted San Francisco punk band VKTMS, and in my opinion it is absolutely essential. The A-side 100% White Girl is immediately memorable, and the clear winner on this 7", however the b-side is no slouch either. This really is a classic old school punk single in my opinion.

Metal Disorder - Tape Compilation 1988 or 1989

I dug this tape out from deep in the metal vault today. This compilation features 21 Thrash and Hardcore bands who were trying to make a name for themselves around 1988-89. The compilation was compiled by Metal Disorder Fanzine, and compiles some of the editors’ favorite bands who submitted demos for review in the zine. In hindsight this compilation acts as a nice snapshot of what was going on back in the pre-internet days, when compilations like this or tape trading or reading zines was the only way to find out about underground music...man I miss those days.

Hidden within this 90 minute tape you will find the following bands:

Youth Youth Youth - Sin - mini Lp 1983 Fringe Product

This record has been spinning on repeat on my turntable for days so I figured I might as well share. Excellent mini Lp from these Canadian punk/hardcore rockers. Great vocals, clean production and the pace never lets up from beginning to end, as a matter of fact if you don't listen carefully you might think a few of the songs are repeating as they are all very similiar, but for some reason that is not a bad thing with this record.

When Men Where Men...And Sheep Were Scared - Bemisbrain Records 1985

Compilation of mostly Long Beach Ca punk bands. I have never heard this record before, so I am going to take a different approach to this one and just jot down my thoughts about this record as I give it a first listen.

Side 1 kicks off with Rhino 39 Delivering 2 cool songs. I have never paid any attention to the Vandals, are all their songs as annoying as the two on this compilation ? Red Beret drop 2 descent punky new wave type tracks. The Crewd are also strange but not in a good way for me,I'm not liking the vocals , and their song "Lady of the Night" feels like it is never going to end.... Okay so from side 1 I may listen to Rhino 39 again.

Side 2 gets things started with the debut of Falling Idols and I now have no interest in hearing any of their other recorded material at this point, although their song "Cut It Out" is okay. Next up are the 3 bands that actually made me want this record... Secret Hate, Nip Drivers and Target of Demand, and thankfully all 3 of them deliver the goods . Secret Hate drops "Bomb Chic" which is a strange and wonderful song, and they follow it up with "Death In The Desert" which is also excellent. Nip Drivers give us a cover of Duran Duran's "Rio" followed by "E.Y.O.B" which is a cool and yet again strange song. Finally Target of Demand are up and they seriously blow everyone else away in my opinion with 2 tight fast aggressive angry hardcore punk songs.

So overall this is a collection of strange songs that may not be for everyone, and it won't surprise me if some of you like all the songs I hated and hate all the songs I liked or if upon repeated listens I find myself liking more of this record than I did on first listen...Dave G.

Even Worse - What Are They Doing In Trenton Live 45 - 1982

Here's an old school NYHC 7" featuring Thurston Moore , yeah that guy and Jack Rabid from the Big Takeover zine. Recorded live but don't let that scare you, the sound quality is excellent. Cool piece of NYHC history from one of the scenes lessor known bands...despite the pedigree.

Graven Image - Kicked Out of The Scene - Eskimo Records 1983

Richmond VA punkers Graven Image played a loose fast paced brand of hardcore punk with some sloppy guitar solos thrown in for good measure. This is good shit, sort of along the lines of my previous post Law and Order.

Law and Order - 12 Song ep - Fetal Records 1981

Early Maryland / DC punk rock from 81, and what a glorious punk rock mess this record is. Give it a listen for yourself, these guys deserve some recognition. Great songs, very strange and or terrible recording, but it does add some sort of charm to the disc in general. Coulda / shoulda been a classic...

Medieval - st 12" New Renaissance Records 1986 - repost from August 2008

Found a fairly poor review of this record in an old issue of Metal Forces today, and I figured I would report this one for fun and to give people a chance to compare the music with the interview. If I come across more interviews of old posts I think I will update them to include the reviews because I think it adds an interesting dimension to the listening process. Anyway, I think Mr. Exley completely missed the fact that the outdated production values actually add a dimension to the music that I don't think it would have if it had received the standard 1986 thrash / doom metal production...Dave G.

Mortal Sin - Mayhemic Destruction 1986

I remember these guys made a pretty big splash with this Lp back in the day. I remember this album seemed so exotic to me when I was a kid because the band was from Australia. AC/ DC exotic...nope, but Mortal Sin holy shit who knew there were fucking thrash bands down under ? Anyway, I wanted this record real bad so I remember going to the post office to get an international money order and having no idea what the hell I was doing. I remember the postal dude had me fill out a long form for some reason and he took my money and sent my letter on its way. To make a long story short I never received my Lp and to this day I have no idea if I even got an international money order or if the guy just put my money in his pocket lol. Anyway, I somehow ended up with 2 copies of this record at the end of the day. The image on the left is the original Aussie release on Mega Metal Productions and the image on the right is the later world wide pressing on Vertigo records. As far as the music goes it sounds somewhat like early Kill Em' All era Metallica...not sure this completely stands the test of time for me musically, but it still holds a special place in my heart. Moral of the story...thank god for paypal lol.

Enerjetics - Don't Stop The....Demo 1983

Two posts in one day you ask ? When you have something this good...why wait ?

The Energetics are a complete mystery band from NJ. I got these files some time ago and I didn't want to post them because I couldn't find any information about this band, and sometimes when I have something really rare I like to keep it to myself. Well, after holding onto these recordings for a while the need to find out more about this band finally caused me to send the tracks over to my friend Erich at Good Bad Music For Bad, Bad Times to see if he could shed any light on these excellent recordings. After about a week Erich got back to me asking me for more information about the band hahaha. Well, to make a long story short Erich convinced me to share these songs with the masses "in then name of the arts", and also to see if we can't find out some more information about this excellent mystery band...Dave G. oh one other thing I almost forgot. The music is mostly uptempo catchy straight up old school punk rock the way you want to hear it done.

Blood Feast - Face Fate 12" - New Renaissance Records 1987

What do I do now that I called NRR a sub-par label in my previous post ? I ask for even more punishment by posting this record and claiming straight out that I like it. I remember getting the Blood Lust demo from these Bayonne NJ thrashers before the name change to Blood Feast, I still have that tape in my collection actually. Unlike the Executioner record these dudes are actually tight, and their drummer is much more competent than Executioner's. I think this is a fun record to listen to with it' solid riffs, quick drumming and blood curdling howls...so there you go...let me have it...Dave G.

Executioner - Break The Silence -- New Renaissance Records 1987

Stopped by a local video store today that has recently begun selling vinyl...Vinyl in the front and porno in the back hahahaha. Anyway, this shop is owned by an old school punk rock drummer who has played with a few famous 80's Jersey punk bands who shall remain nameless, because I don't want to give away my new vinyl spot. Anyway, I found a few metal records there today including this Lp from Executioner who I had never heard before.

I sort of knew what to expect from this record just because it is on the New Renaissance label who always seemed to release decent quality records by bands who were not yet prime time players in the Thrash scene back in the day. This is the bands sophomore release and it packs enough good riffs to keep me listening. Overall I think this sounds like a record by a band who were one release away from getting something good out there, unfortunately or fortunately depending on your outlook a 3rd album never happened.

P.S. Every time I look at the back cover to this record I can't help but think Slayer. Pull out your copy of Show No Mercy and Hell Awaits and you'll see what I mean.

Underground Soldier - Fun Before Profit ! Speed of Sound Records 1984

Here's a band I had never heard of until my brother pulled it from a used bin a few weeks ago and passed it over to me saying this looks cool. I don't worry about my brother going through the used bin ahead of me since we don't normally look for the same records. Anyway,I looked at the back cover and saw a dude in what I initially thought was a Motorhead shirt and figured that was reason enough to add this Lp to the buy pile. Upon futher inspection when I got home I noticed this baby was recorded at Inner Ear Studios in 1984 by none other than Don Zientra and it was produced by ... Ian Mackaye...score. Musically, this isn't exactly what you would expect based on my lead in and your familiarity with the DC punk scene, but for the most part it is excellent early DC punk, but not completely in the Dischord style. Also the female fronted vocals are a definite bonus for me...Dave G.

No Mercy - Widespread Bloodshed /Love Runs Red -- Suicidal Records 1987

Part of me thoroughly enjoys this record while part of me feels the whole affair is a bit corny 20+ years after the fact. Luckily the part of me that thoroughly enjoys this record trumps the later. For those of you who have somehow never heard this I'll describe it as Suicidal Tendencies hahaha later Dave G.
